High-speed internet comes to rural Mason County neighborhoods
Here is the juicy part of the article:
"PUD No. 3 applied for $725,000 from the state last month to build fiber out to six communities: the Tahuya River Valley and Lake Christine neighborhoods near Tahuya, Island View in Grapeview, Chapman Road on Harstine Island, an area near the Bingham Creek Fish Hatchery in Matlock and around Schafer State Park.
Those neighborhoods had been a part of the district’s long-term fiber plans, but they weren’t at the top of the list because the district requires at least 75 percent of the residents in an area interested in fiber to submit a request for services.
“We didn’t pick neighborhoods that were very close to reaching that 75 percent threshold, but they are ones we felt it was important to get connected soon,” Holzgrove said. “This would be an ‘auto-complete’ to help us start and finish these projects sooner.”
If the application is successful, it’s likely the district would only qualify for loan dollars, but the loan would be paid back through those customers’ construction fees, Myer said.
Customers who qualify for the district’s low-income electricity program are also now able to apply for a $10 deduction in their fiber construction costs, which Hood Canal Communications and iFiber Communications have agreed to match, bringing the total deduction to $20 per month."
